THE SHORT STORY
I started off being a writer in theatre. In order to do that I had to learn how to fund my own work. 10 years alter, via being a Head of Development and an Executive Director, I now split my time between writing and strategy.
At the core of all of this work is a desire to change who gets to imagine the future. Arts & culture is where we do this imagining, but some of us have experienced huge barriers to be part of this.
My writing and theatre-making now focuses on creating spaces where people can do some reimagining. I have quite a nerdy interest in things like physics, astronomy and economics but I am also a product of a Doncaster upbringing so I’m interested in exploring these things through performance forms like tribute acts, karaoke and comedy.
My writing tends to involve heavy research but it also tends to be a little silly, camp and often joyful. I don’t think big ideas are in tension with entertainment, at least not for me.
A lot of people know me for a show called “Can You See Into a Black Hole?” about my experience of growing up with epilepsy and how disabled young people find adventure. I’m really interested in the dramaturgy of disability, class and queerness.
I’m working on a slightly more formal version of this - it’ll appear below shortly.
